Patron is undoubtedly one of the most impressive distilleries I've ever visited. The picturesque landscaping and historic buildings create a captivating ambiance, while the warm and welcoming staff enhances the overall experience. During our two-day visit, we joined other retailers from St. Louis and bar owners from Indianapolis for an immersive journey into the world of Patron. We were meticulously guided through the entire production process, from the cultivation of agave to the meticulous hand-bottling of each exquisite product.

Across the street lies the Don Julio compound, where a streamlined distillation process has been implemented, utilizing stainless steel fermentation tanks in contrast to Patron's traditional oak tanks. Patron's recent acquisition of an additive-free certification, a groundbreaking achievement in the industry, further solidifies its commitment to crafting exceptional tequila. As a cherished memento of our trip, we had the privilege of selecting a single barrel to commemorate our visit. Patron's limited-edition barrels embody the spirit of craftsmanship and dedication that underpins their brand.

The 5 options we sampled through were:
• Batch 53F: Age 11.77 months (Repo), Oak: Whiskey Used
• Batch 57F: Age 11.00 months (Repo), Oak: Limousin Oak
• Batch 48F: Age 12.87 months (Anejo), Oak: American Oak
• Batch 67E: Age 22.17 months (Anejo), Oak: Whiskey Used
• Batch 86E: Age 19.93 months (Anejo), Oak: American Oak sides with French oak heads

Patron's tequila production process seamlessly blends traditional and modern techniques. A portion of the cooked agave is crushed using the old-world method of a tahona, a large volcanic stone wheel, while the remaining agave is processed through a more efficient roller mill. This combination of methods yields a well-rounded flavor profile, with the tahona-crushed agave imparting earthy, vegetal notes and the roller mill-processed agave contributing citrusy accents.

Patron categorizes its tequilas based on aging duration: Reposados are aged up to 12 months, Anejos between 1 and 3 years, and Extra Anejos 3 years or older. The choice of wood barrels also significantly influences the tequila's flavor profile.

After carefully considering the various options, we selected Batch 86E, an Extra Anejo that delivers a harmonious balance of oaky and sweet flavors. The ex-whiskey barrels, while pleasant, tended to overpower the tequila's delicate notes. We particularly appreciated the interplay of American and French oak barrels, which imparted a well-rounded and complex flavor profile. These same barrels are used to craft two of Patron's limited-edition tequilas, "El Alto" and "Burdeas," which are both exceptional expressions.
