Whiskey Advocate’s Craft Whiskey of 2013

Few-RyeFEW Rye, from Evanston, IL was named Whiskey Advocate’s Craft Whiskey of the Year for 2013.

From Lew Bryson’s review: “Although it’s young, the whiskey is well-made and clean in character, not funky and flawed, which still counts for a lot these days. As I said in my review (an 89 score), “Straightforward rye crisps out of the glass in no-nonsense style; dry grain, sweet grass, and light but insistent anise almost wholly drown out the barrel character.” It’s backed up on the palate, where you’ll get more rye, some tarragon and dry mint spice, and then some oak in the warming finish”

FEW also produces a 3-grain bourbon. Handcrafted in small batches and aged in charred oak barrels, it is a bourbon of uncommon complexity.

Both FEW Rye and Bourbon are available at our Fairview Height’s store.

Corazon Anejo Tequila aged in Van Winkle Casks

ripExpresiones de Corazon Barrel-Aged Tequila is a collaboration between David Grapshi, Tequila National Sales Manager with Gemini Spirits & Wine, Harlan Wheatley of Buffalo Trace, Miguel Cedeño Cruzand the tequila master distiller Mario Echanove.

From Corazon’s website:

“In 2010, Corazon acquired the best barrels from the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection ‚Äì including 21 barrels from each category of George T. Stagg, Sazerac Rye 18, Old Rip Van Winkle and Buffalo Trace. Using these award-winning barrels from Buffalo Trace provided its own flavor and unique characteristics to the Tequila. They were then stored in the first row at Casa San Matias aging facility in Acatic, Los Altos Jalisco, insuring the ideal level of air flow to aid in the aging process.”

The Old Rip Van Winkle Anejo spent 23 months in cask and is bottled at 40% ABV.

Queen Jennie Sorghum Whiskey

queen jennieQueen Jennie Sorghum Whiskey, from Old Sugar Distillery in Wisconsin, is now in stock at our Fairview Heights location. Queen Jennie is made from 100% Wisconsin sorghum.

It is aged in small charred oak barrels from Minnesota.  Less sour than a bourbon and less harsh than a rye, Queen Jennie Sorghum Whiskey has a unique character deserving of its name.

Review From

“Queen Jennie (named after Jennie Justo, a famous female bootlegger that served Madison during Prohibition) would easily pass as rum in a blind tasting. Gold in color, it features a nose of nuts and brown sugar, with only the lightest hint of grain influence. On the palate, more of the same. Vanilla caramel and marshmallow are at play as well, the only hint of whiskeydom being a more forward wood character on the finish than you typically get with well-aged rums.

Is it whiskey? Not as you’re likely to think of it. But is it good? Surprisingly, yeah. Up front it’s silky sweet, but that barrel-focused finish makes you think twice about it. Pour a bit for your rum-obsessed friends and ask them what they think. The puzzled expressions and halting commentary will likely leave them begging for more information… which you may or may not choose to share.”

Aberlour 18yo Available in IL

aberlour_18yoAberlour 18 Year Old Highland Single Malt Whisky is now available in our Illinois store!

Only the very best casks have been selected, ensuring a whisky of unsurpassed richness: it is by far the most indulgent Aberlour expression. A whisky of perfect structure, the ultimate expression of Aberlour.

“There was an Aberlour 18 on the market for a spell several years ago, aged in sherry casks, that I really enjoyed. Now we have this new 18 year old expression. There are big shoes to fill, and this whisky fills them quite nicely. Once again, the sherry is prominent throughout, with its lush fruit, velvety texture, and sweet demeanor. But it’s not cloying or sappy — the sherry blends in nicely with the rest of the flavors. Ripe orange, apricot preserve, peach cobbler, chocolate-covered caramel, and toffee, with a sprinkling of cinnamon and cocoa. Rich, silky smooth, satisfying finish. Very impressive. The Aberlour 18 year old’s reputation remains intact!”

“This expression is the latest release from the Speyside distillery of Aberlour…it joins 10, 12 and 16-year-old bottlings in the UK domestic market, and like many versions of Aberlour, has a strong influence of Sherry wood. The nose offers sweet Sherry, honey and orange creams, becoming richer and more profound with exposure to air. Spices and figs emerge. Full-bodied and medium-sweet in the mouth, with spicy Sherry, apricots and peaches. Water teases out notes of furniture polish, liquorice and smoke. The finish is long, with silky cream, more spices and figs, and a final suggestion of gentle oak. A lovely, confident, satisfying, after-dinner Aberlour. Sherried Speyside at its best.”

 4/5 stars. -

Beefeater Burrough’s Reserve available in IL

beefeater-burroughs-reserve-ginHand-distilled in a copper still, in small batches, then rested in Jean de Lillet oak barrels, Beefeater calls this the ‘gin for free thinkers.’

Beefeater redefines the enjoyment of gin with the launch of Burrough’s Reserve. Distilled in a small historic copper still from the 19th century, the spirit is then uniquely rested in Jean de Lillet oak barrels. A very fine aperitif, Jean de Lillet is only created in exceptional vintage years, making its barrels the optimum resting place for an ultra-Premium gin.

Produced following the original Beefeater recipe, refined by the founder of Beefeater James Burrough in the 1860s, Burrough’s Reserve is distilled by hand using James Burrough’s original copper “Still Number 12”. With a capacity of only 268L, Still Number 12 produces such small batches that each bottle of Burrough’s Reserve displays its batch and bottle number on the label.

As one of the leading experts in gin with over 45 years’ experience, Master Distiller Desmond Payne explains, “I wanted to create something truly unique that celebrated the distilling heritage of Beefeater. I expect Burrough’s Reserve to appeal to free thinking individuals who enjoy challenging convention and exploring new sensory experiences with gin.”

Burrough’s Reserve is a permanent addition to Beefeater’s lineup, but will only be produced in limited quantities throughout the year. We have it now in Fairview Heights.

Limited Edition Scotch Available in Fairview Heights

Blue-Hanger-7th-Limited-Release-206x300Arriving in America for the first time, Anchor Distilling introduces Blue Hanger 7th Limited Release, a United States exclusive from Berry Bros. & Rudd Spirits. Limited to only 3,088 bottles, this new variant of Blue Hanger is comprised of the following whiskies; one hogshead of Bruichladdich 1992, one butt of Bunnahabhain 1990, four hogsheads of Miltonduff 1997, and two hogsheads of Bunnahabhain Moine (peated) 2006.

This blended malt whisky is named after William “Blue” Hanger, the Third Lord Coleraine, a loyal customer of Berry Bros. at the end of the 18th
century. Considered one of the best-dressed men of his day, his nickname
came from his preferred clothing color. Blue Hanger was originally a blended Scotch whisky intended for the diplomatic export market in 1934, but disappeared for a period of time until 2003 when Doug McIvor, spirits
manager, began his experiments in vatting malts. His objective from the beginning has been to create the best blended malt possible from existing stock.

“This exceptional and very limited blended malt turned out as impeccably as its namesake William ‘Blue’ Hanger,” says Doug McIvor. “Bewitching aromas of orange peel, melon skin, vanilla and peat-smoke tangle with hints of sandalwood, leather and moist pipe tobacco augmenting the experience. The smokiness is firm but not dominant, allowing the fruit notes to frolic. The palate is luscious and complex, building with sweet fruity intensity and finishing with lingering peat-smoke and a spicy edge.”

As with every expression of Blue Hanger, the strength is 45.6%, in recognition of the original Berry Bros. blend, which was bottled at 20 below proof. Blue Hanger 7 is only available in the United States.

Our Fairview store has a limited number of them in stock.
